About Mvuvi BlueConnect

Mvuvi BlueConnect is a Kenyan fisheries company. We run cold storage and a fish marketplace for the Lake Victoria basin — helping fishers and traders keep catch cold from the moment it leaves the water, and connecting that catch to buyers who will pay for quality.

The problem we work on

A large share of the fish landed in Kenya never reaches a buyer in good condition. Catch comes ashore in the heat of the day, and without reliable cooling at the landing site it loses value within hours. The fisher takes whatever price is offered before the fish spoils. That loss compounds through the whole chain.

The missing piece is rarely the fish and rarely the demand. It is cold storage close enough to the water to matter, and a way to find it.

What we actually run

Two connected things. A directory of certified cold storage facilities that fishers and traders can search and book, with capacity, temperature range, power source and operating hours published for each one. And a marketplace where buyers can see what stock is held where, by species, and inquire directly.

Facility operators join the network through our partner programme and list unused capacity. Every facility that joins commits to our Community Stewardship Standards.

Where we work

Our focus is the Lake Victoria basin — Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Busia — where the concentration of artisanal fishers and the distance to major markets makes cold chain the difference between a fair price and a forced sale. We also work with facilities elsewhere in Kenya where the same route-to-market problem exists.

The species we handle most are tilapia, Nile perch, catfish and omena.

Who we work with

We build alongside research institutions, accelerators and foundations:

  • KIRDI (Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute)
  • Leilah Janah Foundation
  • Garage 48
  • afrifortified

Not to be confused with

"Mvuvi" means fisherman in Swahili, so the name is widely shared — including by another company in our own sector. To be unambiguous:

  • Mvuvi Holdings is a tilapia aquaculture group formed by the 2024 merger of Chicoa Fish Farms and Lake Harvest, with farms in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. They are a fish producer operating in southern Africa. We are not affiliated with them. Mvuvi BlueConnect operates only in Kenya, and we run cold storage and a marketplace rather than farms.
  • Mvuvi Lodge (Watamu) and Mvuvi Boutique Resort (Zanzibar) are hotels. Mvuvi Fishing is a sport-fishing charter in Watamu. Mvuvi Industries previously occupied this domain.
